John has over 40 years’ experience in consumer protection. Qualifying as a Weights and Measures Inspector he progressed to become the Head of Trading Standards at Brighton and Hove City Council in 1997. John is now the Principal Trading Standards Officer with special responsibility for tackling rogue trading.

As Chair of the Association of Chief Trading Standards Officers, founder and President of a local Credit Union, Chairman of Trading Standards South East and a member of the NAFN Executive Board since 2004 John is an extremely well respected and influential figure. In 2012 he was made a Fellow of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI). The following year he was appointed Chair of the Institute and remains their lead officer for Mass Marketing Fraud and Scams.

He continues to develop his role as consumer champion, acting as a non-executive chair of the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman service that includes the Rail Ombudsman and Furniture Ombudsman. He is also an advisor to the British Institute of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Kitchens Installation and assists CTSI in maintaining the Consumer Codes Approval Scheme and the Alternative Dispute Resolution regime.
